Elliptical machine technology is the current the name for devices that use numerous mechanisms in order to create a pattern

of movement that involve the use of foot pedals. This type of movement is preferred and its goal is to mimic the natural path

of the hip joints, knee, and ankle that is experienced during locomotion, such as running, jogging, striding, and walking.

Basically, elliptical technology is made up of a crank arm that is similar to that of a bicycle which is attaches to a bar at

one end while on the other end it rotates around an axis. The rotating end moves linearly as the crank rotates. Since one end

of the bar moves linearly and the other end rotates circularly, the points that are between the two ends of the bar move in

an elliptical pattern. The points of the bar move in a flatter, thinner ellipsis and the end that is closest to the crank

move in a circular ellipsis.

One of the most basic advantages of elliptical technology is that there is no impact on the back and lower limbs. This is

different than a treadmill because the foot isn’t continuously being lifted off of the running surface and then strikes that

surface upon the foot’s return. With an elliptical machine, the foot pedal and the foot are in constant contact which

eliminates impact.

Stair stepper machines also have impact force. While the feet do remain in constant contact with the foot pedals of a stair

stepper, the feet pedals experience a near instantaneous reversal in direction. Basically, the foot pedals move in one

direction and must then stop and is then pushed in the opposite direction. This force that is required to reverse the

movement of the device, results in impact to the lower body’s joints.

An elliptical machine incorporates a continuous, smooth motion which doesn’t have a reversal of direction. The type of

exercise that is experienced on an elliptical machine is weight bearing and therefore helps to prevent osteoporosis.

Also, while cycling has been recognized to be a safe way to improve the cardiovascular system, an elliptical machine offers a

more functional pattern of movement. Because an elliptical machine simulates the pattern of natural walking, it lends itself

to an upper body component of exercise. Most other exercise machines, either as a result of their pattern or their mechanical

structure don’t provide a total body workout. An elliptical machine offers natural motion which provides a lower and upper

body workout.

Mu Lan Chuan is a form of Tai Chi and Chi Kung, whose graceful movements are inspired by a 5th-century narrative poem, “The Song of Mu Lan”, that tells of a young girl’s devotion to her father. Author Sheng Keng Yun has practised Mu Lan Chuan since a young age, and here she illustrates and explains every movement. Most use the whole body and stimulate important acupuncture points. It is especially good for lower back pain, digestive and intestinal problems, and reproductive health.
